FAQ
We've thought of your questions
What is competitive swimming?
Competitive swimming is a sport practised in a 25-metre or 50-metre pool. Athletes develop their technique, endurance and speed in the four official competition strokes.
What are the competition strokes?
The four official competitive-swimming strokes are:
Butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.
What distances are swum in competition?
Distances range from 50 m to 1,500 m depending on the stroke and age category. Young swimmers start with short distances, then progress to longer events as they develop.
Is Natation Gatineau suitable for new swimmers?
Absolutely! From the swim school to the competitive groups, our programs welcome swimmers of all ages and levels. An evaluation guides each swimmer to the group that’s right for them.
Are there other events in competition?
Yes. In addition to individual events in the four strokes, there is the individual medley (IM), which combines all four strokes, as well as freestyle and medley team relays.
How does the competition network work?
Swimmers progress through different levels of competition: intra-club meets, regional competitions, provincial invitationals, then provincial, national and international championships depending on the qualifying standards achieved.
Where can I find more information about competitive swimming?
Visit the websites of the Fédération de natation du Québec (fnq.ca) and Swimming Canada (swimming.ca), or contact the club team directly — we’ll be happy to answer your questions.
Which swimming events are on the Olympic program?
The Olympic Games include individual events from 50 m to 1,500 m in the four strokes, the individual medley, relays, and the 10 km open-water marathon.
